How to Play

Even if they might seem complicated at first, the rules of chess are pretty straightforward. There are six types of pieces on the board: eight pawns, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, a king, and a queen. Each of them moves differently on the grid of 64 black and white squares.

The two players take their turn to make a move, starting with the white pieces. The aim is simple: checkmate your opponent's king. To take one of your enemy's pieces, you need to put one of your pieces in its place by performing a legal move. 

Are you ready to learn how each piece moves? The pawn can only move one square forward. There are two exceptions to this rule: the first time you move a pawn, you can advance one or two spaces. Besides, you can only capture an enemy piece by moving your pawn diagonally across one square. They are the least valuable pieces in the game, but using them wisely will help you get ahead in your strategy.

When it comes to the rook, moving it is much simpler: it can only travel horizontally or vertically on the board. However, you can move as many squares as you want at a time.

The bishop can only move diagonally across any number of spaces. It gets more complicated when it comes to the knight! It can move in an L-shape, which means you have many more options. Don't worry, as the computer will not allow you to move incorrectly!

Let's talk about the most important two pieces: the queen and the king. Did you know that the former is the most powerful piece on the board? It can move horizontally, vertically, and diagonally across as many squares as you want. However, the king is the most important piece! Despite this fact, it can only move one square in any direction. 

If you want to become a pro, you also need to know about castling. It's an unusual move in chess, the only one where you can move two pieces in one round. Suppose your king and one of the rooks are still in their original position. In that case, you can perform this tactical maneuver to protect the king. It involves moving the king two squares horizontally, towards the rook, then moving the rook to the space that the king has crossed. Try it and see how it affects your strategy!

Time is of the essence! The faster you play, the more points you will get at the end of each match. What is more, each player has a timer that stops when they make a move. Therefore, you can't think about your next step for too long, as you'll lose the match.
